Season of Corpses
No, I am not referring to the various wars around the world but my backyard. Late summer is the season of corpses. They are littered under the fruit trees in my sideyard. Little voles and field mice, occasionally a rabbit appear for a week or two and then stop showing up. I know some of them are kills made by our aging cat, but some seem to just up and die in the shade of the apple. So in an effort to not expose my kids to the harsh reality of indiscriminate death, I distract the kids and shovel the bodies into a mass grave. I'll be glad when this is over for the year.
